Weather in the san juan mountains

The average high temperatures in July and August range from the mid 60s to the mid 70s; at night it gets to the low 40s. In September both the highs and lows drop by about 5 degrees. In July and August afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon which results in a plethora of wildflowers, green meadows and tundra. It is also a source of sudden temperature/climate shifts. To be prepared layering is highly recommended; please follow the clothing list.

  • Sleeping bag with stuff sack
  • Extra heavy duty garbage bags (water proofing in sacks)
  • Therma-rest sleeping pad
  • 2 short sleeve shirts
  • 2 long sleeve fleece shirts
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 2 pairs of fleece pants
  • Long underwear
  • 3 pairs of hiking socks
  • Underwear
  • Fleece jacket or pullover
  • Down jacket
  • Stocking/fleece hat
  • Ball cap or sun hat
  • Shoes for camp (light weight running shoes)
  • Toiletries in small bottles in a zip lock bag
  • Sun glasses
